Annual return and reconciliation statement filed correctly before 31 December.
GSTR-9 is the annual return that summarises the whole year's sales, purchases, tax paid and input credit. It is due on 31 December after the financial year ends. GSTR-9C is a reconciliation between the GST returns and the audited financial statements and applies to larger businesses above the notified turnover limit. Small taxpayers may be exempt or have optional filing in some years, as notified.
The annual return is the last chance to correct the year's mistakes and it is the document the department uses for scrutiny and audit. Errors can lead to notices years later, so careful reconciliation matters.
