Hallmarking (HUID)

BIS jeweller registration, hallmarking of jewellery and HUID record keeping.

About Hallmarking (HUID)

Hallmarking is the official certification of the purity of gold and silver jewellery by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). A hallmarked piece carries the BIS mark, the purity grade (for example 22K916) and a 6-digit alphanumeric HUID, the Hallmark Unique Identification number. The HUID is unique to each piece, and a customer can verify it on the BIS Care app.

Hallmarking of gold jewellery and artefacts is mandatory in the districts notified by the government, and a jeweller must be registered with BIS to sell hallmarked pieces. Small jewellers below the prescribed turnover limit and certain items, such as export jewellery and some traditional types, are exempt, so the exact rule depends on your business and location. Selling jewellery without the required hallmark can lead to a penalty or action under the BIS Act. We register you, help you work with a recognised hallmarking centre, and keep your stock records and invoices in line with the HUID rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is hallmarking compulsory for every jeweller?

Not for everyone. It applies to gold jewellery and artefacts in notified districts, and small jewellers below the prescribed turnover limit and certain products are exempt. We check your position before you start.

What is a HUID?

It is a 6-digit alphanumeric code given to each hallmarked piece. It makes the piece traceable and lets a customer verify it.

Can I sell old stock that is not hallmarked?

Unhallmarked stock generally has to be hallmarked before it is sold as new jewellery. Tell us what you have and we will tell you the correct route.

What if I sell without the required hallmark?

It can lead to penalty or action under the BIS Act. We explain the exposure for your case.
